Solar street lights vandalized
Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Leeward Islands on September 6,2017 and left total devastation on every island in her direct path.
Althogh Antigua was spared from the wrath of hurricane Irma with minimal damage, during the passage of one of the most dangerous hurricane to date, the solar street lights installed in the Shell Beach area and the housing project at Dredge Bay were vandalized.
The lights were a donation from the People’s Republic of China and there were visible signs that the solar panel did sustain damage from Irma’s strong winds, however, the lock boxes were preyed open and some of the batteries removed from the street lights and there may have been possible vandalism on the street lights at Lauchland Benjamin Drive as well.
Caribbean Times urges the perpetrators to return the batteries that are essential for operations of the lights which are now required in light of the passage of the recent hurricane.
